What to Write in a Thank-You Note for a Money Gift

Thank the person for the gift and for remembering the occasion. If you have a plan for the money and want to share it, add that plan. If you don't, write about the gesture instead. The note doesn't need an amount, a receipt, or an account of your finances.

Thank you for the birthday gift, Aunt Celia. I haven't decided how I'll use it yet, but I really appreciated your kindness and the funny message in your card.

Thank you for the bookshop gift card, Dev. I'm looking forward to a slow browse and choosing something just for pleasure.

“Gift” can cover cash or a check when the occasion makes it clear what you're acknowledging. Naming the store is useful for a gift card, particularly if the choice connects to an interest you share.

Pick the branch that fits your actual plans

Start with this question: have you decided what the gift will go toward? Then choose the version that tells the truth without sharing more than you want to.

You have a specific plan and want to mention it.

Thank you for the graduation gift. I'm putting it toward a desk lamp for my new study space. I was glad to have you cheering me on that day.

You know the general purpose, but want to keep it broad.

Thank you for the generous wedding gift. We're setting it aside as we get settled, and we appreciate you thinking of us.

You haven't decided, or prefer not to discuss spending.

Thank you for remembering my birthday with such a kind gift. It was lovely to hear from you, and I enjoyed the photo you tucked into the card.

That last version doesn't hide a missing piece of the note. The appreciation is the message. A spending plan can add a detail, but it isn't a requirement for sounding grateful.

Make a gift-card thank-you specific without inventing a purchase

A gift card points to a place or activity, which gives you something concrete to name before you've redeemed it. If you know why the giver chose that store, you can acknowledge the connection.

You remembered my weakness for stationery. Thank you for the shop gift card, Leah—choosing a notebook will be a treat.

Thank you for the garden-center gift card. I haven't picked anything yet, but I'm looking forward to looking around when spring arrives.

If you don't know the reason for the choice, don't invent one: “Thank you for the gift card and the birthday wishes” is enough. You also don't have to promise to send a shopping update. Offer one only if it sounds enjoyable to both of you.

For more general wording, these short thank-you messages focus on gratitude rather than the value of a gift.

Remove the bookkeeping

An early draft can accidentally sound like a transaction confirmation:

Thank you for the $75. I received it on Monday, and I will use $40 for one thing and save the rest. I'll let you know when I've spent it.

Try keeping the human detail and dropping the report:

Thank you for the birthday gift, Luis. I'm putting it toward the cooking class I mentioned. I appreciate you helping me try something I've been looking forward to.

The cooking class is a demonstration; replace it with your real plan, or delete that sentence entirely. Don't imply the gift fully paid for something if it only contributed to it.

Hallmark's thank-you note guide recommends adding a detail about a gift's intended use. Treat that as a useful option, not pressure to invent a purchase. Your relationship with the giver offers other honest details: a conversation, their note, or seeing them at the occasion.

If you want to send a card

Let the front say thanks, then keep the inside focused on the giver. There's no reason to put an amount or a balance into a shareable card.

Front: A little more room for a new idea.

Inside: Luis, thank you for the birthday gift. I'm putting it toward that cooking class. It was kind of you to remember how much I wanted to give it a try.

For that birthday example, WigglePost's default birthday start may be a useful place to begin. Replace the celebratory starter message with your thanks, check the artwork, and add your own details manually. If your gift marked a different occasion, change the direction as well. A simple message to the giver is equally suitable when you just want to acknowledge it promptly.
